Book Talk - Faith, Secularism, and Humanitarian Engagement

Alastair Ager's new book, Faith, Secularism, and Humanitarian Engagement: Finding the Place of Religion in the Support of Displaced Communities, examines the contradiction between the long history of reliance upon religion and local faith groups in humanitarian work and the fact that modern humanitarian movements are often organized within a secular framework in order to ensure evenhanded and nonpartisan action.  Join us this September as Ager and George Rupp discuss the implications of global humanitarianism’s conflicts and alliances with religion and secularism.

Alastair Ager is Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh and Professor of Population and Family Health at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.

George Rupp is Columbia University President Emeritus and Adjunct Professor of Comparative Religion, International Affairs, and Public Health.
