IRCPL Graduate Summer Research Fellowships are available to Columbia University graduate students for any type of research activity related to the study of religion or secularism. The fellowship provides each student a maximum of $4,000 to cover expenses related to their research during the Summer of 2024, including living and travel expenses. See our current fellows here.
Eligibility
Master's and doctoral students at Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, Jewish Theological Seminary, and Teachers College are welcome to apply. Please note that students completing their degrees before Fall 2024 are not eligible for this fellowship.
Application Requirements
All proposals must be submitted in English. Emphasis should be placed on the completeness of the application and clarity of content. Proposals must be submitted through the online application form.
Please submit your documents as a single PDF file and clearly label it with your first and last name.
Curriculum vitae (maximum two pages): Please include your departmental affiliation and up-to-date contact information.
Description of the research project (maximum five pages, double-spaced).
Schedule for completion of the dissertation or research project (maximum two pages).
Personal statement: Please tell us about yourself (maximum 500 words).
Budget: Please itemize your budget with a breakdown of expected expenses.
Transcript: Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
One letter of reference from a faculty member who will serve on your dissertation committee or supervise your research. This should be emailed to ircpl@columbia.edu. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the faculty member sends a letter of reference. Late letters will not be accepted.

+ What can I include in the budget?
You can include costs associated with your research project. Examples include: rent, internet bill, translation costs, access to archives, stationary, technology purchases.
+ I'm in my Nth year. Does this affect my eligibility?
No. As long as you are a graduate student at Columbia University (or one of its affiliates, listed above) you are eligible to apply.
+ Do you accept proposals in my discipline?
Yes. We accept proposals from any discipline, but they have to be related to the study of religion or secularism.
+ Can I apply to multiple IRCPL fellowships in the same year?
Yes. You can apply to as many fellowships for which you are eligible.
+ I am a previous IRCPL fellowship recipient. Can I apply again?
You can apply to this fellowship if you have received a different IRCPL fellowship in the past. You cannot receive the same fellowship twice.
conditions of the award
IRCPL will host a research fellow roundtable discussion prior to the dispersing of research funds. All award recipients are required to attend the roundtable to discuss their work and future research plans. IRCPL Research Fellows are then expected to present and participate in a research fellows colloquium the following academic year. This colloquium will provide fellows with opportunities to present their work and participate in other activities, including those related to professional development.
